Remember how we and the filmmakers have been saying that Tony and Thanos share a special connection, that they essentially mirror each other? Tony’s final stand in Endgame was the last chapter of this narrative as it almost directly correlates with Thanos’ own moment of victory in Infinity War. Both wielded the stones, both snapped their fingers, both dusted a lotta folks, both determined the fate of the universe. Major difference is that, while Thanos was able to “…finally rest, and watch the sun rise on a grateful universe.” in a superficial sense, Tony Stark embodied this in a more meaningful way. Thanos “retired” and went off to his little idyllic farm world, arrogantly thinking he made a positive impact on the universe. And yet he was all alone while everyone else left suffered because of his actions.

Tony lay dying in unthinkable pain, extremely weakened by the effects of wielding the stones. He’s not a supernatural being; he’s just a man in a can, after all. But he was the most critical piece in saving the universe. There is no happy conclusion without him. He was able to rest, after years of suffering and being tormented by his demons. He died amongst the people he loves. He died knowing that his family was going to be taken care of, that humanity will go on. He died as others can now take up the mantle he’s worked so hard on. He died a hero, the hero he has been for years and the hero he was always meant to be.

“The hardest choices require the strongest of wills.” This line, uttered by Thanos, was never about himself. This was about Tony Stark and the difficult choice had to make. His life was not a waste. This was the last act of defiance of the great Tony Stark. And because of him, the universe is forever grateful.
